Evaluation of Cytotoxicity and Monomer Conversion of Four Orthodontic Adhesives

Summary

The objective of this study is evaluated the cytotoxicity and degree of monomer conversion of orthodontic adhesives, for this we utilize three adhesive materials, were evaluated: Transbond XT (3MUnitek, Monrovia, USA), Fill Magic Ortodôntico (Vigodent, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Orthobond (Morelli, Sorocaba, Brazil). Fibroblast L929 cells were used to evaluate cytotoxicity and degree of monomer conversion of these adhesive materials. Three control groups were also included in the study as follows: Group C+ (positive control) consisting of Tween 80 detergent, Group C- (negative control) consisting of PBS, and Group CC (cell control) consisting of cells not exposed to any material. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by using the dye-uptake technique, which consists of assessing the incorporation of neutral red into viable cells and infra-red spectroscopy was employed to assess the degree of conversion. The results showed that all the adhesive materials being studied were cytotoxic. The values of cell viability for these materials were statistically different between groups CC and C- (P < 0.05). With regard to monomer conversion, statistical differences were found between the four materials evaluated. Based on the present study, one can conclude that all the adhesive materials were found to be cytotoxic during the experimental period. Cytotoxicity was directly related to the degree of monomer conversion of the adhesive materials evaluated.
