Summary
Dentomaxillary anomalies affect a large percentage of the world’s population. They are frequently presented together with dental malposition that have repercussions on the form, function and esthetics of the stomatognathic system. The aim of this study was to create a survey aimed at maxillofacial surgeons in Chile, to find out their preferences when performing orthognathic surgery in order to improve communication between orthodontists and surgeons. A study was carried out by means of a questionnaire with 19 questions to be answered, including general background of the surgeons and respect to their patients, before, during and after orthognathic surgery. When maxillofacial surgeons were consulted about their preferences in patients who will undergo orthognathic surgery, it was found that the complementary examination of choice was CBCT of the craniofacial structures, the type of attachment they recommended was metal brackets with a band up to the second molar, and most of them performed maxillary segmentation. It is concluded that communication between the specialists involved in orthosurgical treatment is key to long-term treatment success.
