Summary
This article analyzes the background and historical origins of the dental degree project at the Universidad de la Frontera. The source of information used is the project itself, which was developed by a group of qualified professionals with knowledge of the oral health situation in the Chilean population. In addition, the paper describes the main milestones and areas in which those who implemented this project had to respond to the contexts and requirements of that time are described (early 1990s), especially the dental reality in regions. Consequently, this work describes and explains the prevailing needs for oral medicine attention (or stomatology) from the proposal of the socio-professional, curricular, and methodological profile that requires implementing a dental surgeon career at the Universidad de La Frontera, Chile.
