Gingival Recession Associated with Orthodontic Treatment: Review of the Evidence and Clinical Strategies

Gingival recessions are common in orthodontic patients, associated with factors such as improper dental movements and thin gingival biotypes. This study reviews the literature to evaluate their relationship with orthodontic treatment and suggests management strategies. A total of 209 articles were analyzed, with 15 selected for detailed review. Findings indicate that orthodontics may increase recession prevalence, especially in patients with thin gingival biotypes and excessive dental movements. A prior periodontal evaluation and appropriate management strategies can mitigate this risk.
