Summary
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malocclusions through the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) in Temuco, IX Region, Chile, in twenty elementary schools, with a random selection of individuals per cluster. The sample consisted of 158 students. The results showed that 82.9% had one or several anomalies in the transverse, vertical or anteroposterior axis. Of all subjects, 5.1% did not need orthodontic treatment. The need for interceptive treatment was 75.3% among the population, rest (19.6%) needed corrective treatment. The main anomalies are open bites followed by crossbites. We conclude that there is a high need for treatment in this age in the city of Temuco. KEY WORDS: interceptive orthodontics, malocclusion.
