Summary
In the Americas region universal health coverage has been promoted as an objective to be achieved. Nevertheless, quality services in all clinical areas are essential in order to reach this objective. This review aims to incorporate basic concepts of quality management in reference to the field of dentistry as well as advocate for the need to implement these policies in current dental practice. The concept of healthcare quality has been defined as the level of achievement of intrinsic objectives to improve health throughout healthcare systems, understanding the legitimate expectations of the population. In this regard, important factors include indicators, safety, and patient-centered comprehensive care. In healthcare agencies the development of quality management involves organizing and structuring work through a quality program, which may involve internal or external evaluations. Quality management requires making changes that lead to better outcomes for patients; it is important for dentists to be knowledgeable in this area and welcome this healthcare culture. Currently, dentistry is beginning to incorporate concepts of quality policy into clinical practice. However, efforts must be made to provide a scientific foundation for healthcare quality. Therefore, it is important to conduct studies that support positive outcomes in patient health, demonstrate process improvements, resource optimization, and achieve the expected impact on people's health.
