Summary

Surgical reconstructions with bone grafts enable the augmentation or stimulation of bone regeneration in structures that have a bone defect or a decrease in their inherent regenerative ability. The purpose of this study was to conduct a literature review to assess clinical parameters and results derived from the various types of grafts utilized in bone regeneration in animals undergoing ovariectomy. A literature review was undertaken in accordance with the guidelines of the report on transparency in systematic reviews and metaanalyses. A comprehensive literature search was conducted between January 2019 and April 14, 2024, utilizing the Medline databases in English and Portuguese. The Medline review found 206 articles. After evaluating titles and abstracts using our inclusion and exclusion criteria, we selected 13 papers for full-text reviews. The selected articles contained a total of 457 creatures. The rat was the most used animal model (86.43 %), followed by rabbits (8.31 %) and sheep (5.25 %). One of the 13 research studies revealed no significant differences in bone development when comparing two biomaterials, but the other studies observed alterations in their experimental groups. We can conclude that several materials are available for bone regeneration. Although autogenous bone remains the best material, synthetic bone substitutes mixed with pharmacological agents or chemical compounds targeted in the bone repair site may be a viable alternative to osteoporotic bone.

KEY WORDS: bone graft, bone regeneration, ovariectomy, osteoporosis.
