Summary

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system that generate alterations in the joints or other tissues, due to ergonomic risk factors. Bruxism (BX) is a repetitive jaw-muscle activity characterized by clenching or grinding the teeth. The objective of the study was to determine the effects of the MSDs risk factors on BX symptoms in dentistry students. The postures of the students were photographed during the clinical sessions, which were analyzed using the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) method and the self-report BX questionnaire (CBA) was applied. Sixty (60) students were evaluated. 60 % (n=36) obtained a RULA final score of 6 and 40 % (n=24) of 7. In turn, 55 % (n=33) had unlikely symptoms of BX; 27 % (n=16) probable symptoms and only 18 % (n=11) presented definitive symptoms of bruxism. Although a relationship was not found between both variables, it is pertinent to investigate further research in this regard.
